An air conditioner is an appliance designed to dehumidify and remove heat from the air. Cooling is performed through a refrigeration cycle in which a heat pump transfers heat from a lower-temperature heat source into a higher-temperature heat sink.

Several types of air conditioners exist. One option is a window unit, which is a unitary system that sits in a window or wall opening, and cools air by blowing warm air over an evaporator. Another is a PTAC system, also known as a wall split or ductless system, that has two separate units or terminal packages that allow it to serve as an air conditioner or heater. Evaporative coolers can be used in dry climates by drawing outside air through a cool wet pad. Finally, central air conditioning is a system that uses ducts to distribute cooled and/or dehumidified air to multiple rooms.
